How to watch YouTube together with PartyStream

You used to need a screen share or a local file to watch YouTube with friends on PartyStream. Now you can paste a YouTube link directly into the room. Each person's browser loads the video from YouTube independently, so there is no quality loss from re-encoding, and the sync stays tight because play, pause, and seek are shared across everyone automatically.

How YouTube co-watch works

When the host pastes a YouTube link, PartyStream loads the same video on everyone's browser. Each person watches directly from YouTube at whatever quality their connection supports. The host controls playback: when they press play, pause, or seek, everyone follows. There is no screen sharing or re-encoding, so the quality is as good as YouTube delivers it to each person.

Step by step

1. Create a room. The host goes to partystream.com, types a name, and clicks Create room. Share the room code or invite link with your friends.
2. Click Paste a YouTube link. On the host's drop zone, there are three buttons: Browse files, Share your screen, and Paste a YouTube link. Click the third one.
3. Paste the YouTube URL. A dialog appears. Paste any YouTube link: https://youtube.com/watch?v=..., https://youtu.be/..., or a Shorts link. Click Add to queue.
4. The video loads for everyone. PartyStream fetches the video title from YouTube and adds it to the queue. The YouTube embed appears in the video area for the host and every guest simultaneously.
5. Press play. The host clicks play on the YouTube player. Everyone's video starts at the same time. Pause, seek, and skip all sync across the room.

When the host presses play, everyone's video starts at the same time. Pause, seek, and skip all sync across the room automatically. If someone joins late, they jump to wherever the host is in the video. No need to tell them "skip to 3:42" in the chat.

YouTube co-watch vs screen sharing

Before the YouTube link feature, the only way to watch YouTube together was to share your screen. Here is why the native YouTube link is better:

• Quality: Each person gets YouTube's native quality for their connection. Screen share re-encodes the video, which degrades quality.
• Bandwidth: The host does not upload anything. Each person downloads the video from YouTube independently. Screen share requires the host to upload the video to every guest.
• Controls: Each person sees YouTube's native player controls. They can adjust their own volume and quality on the YouTube player. Screen share only shows the host's controls.
• Sync: YouTube co-watch has real play/pause/seek sync. Screen share has no sync. If the host pauses in the YouTube tab, guests just see a paused screen.
• Guest count: YouTube co-watch is not limited by the host's upload bandwidth. Screen share is capped at 4 guests because the host uploads a separate stream to each one.

Limitations

• YouTube only. The link feature currently supports YouTube URLs. Direct MP4/WebM URLs are not supported in this version. For local files, use Browse files.
• No queue mixing. You can add YouTube links and local files to the same queue, but the source type switches when the queue advances from a file to a YouTube link or vice versa.
• YouTube ToS. YouTube's Terms of Service apply. Some videos may not be embeddable. If a video cannot be embedded, the YouTube player will show an error.
• Ads. YouTube may show ads to each viewer independently. PartyStream cannot control or skip ads. The host and guests may see different ads or no ads depending on their YouTube subscription status.
• Age-restricted videos. Age-restricted videos require the viewer to be signed into YouTube. PartyStream does not handle YouTube authentication.
